Main ideas
In this unit, we will explore the most significant characteristics that will help us understand the interest fungi hold in the world. We will uncover the crucial role it has played in human life and its pivotal contribution to maintaining the balance of ecosystems.
- Ecological Importance. The characteristics that define fungi and set them apart from other living beings allow us to understand the fundamental role these organisms play in ecosystems. We will explore their roles, considering their lifestyles and strategies for obtaining sustenance.
- Responsible Awareness: The significant surge in demand for edible forest mushrooms and their entry into international markets makes it imperative to understand the importance of promoting their responsible and sustainable use. Increasing awareness about the significance of conserving fungal diversity is crucial for economic, environmental, and social benefits. Proper management of mushroom-producing forests by specialised technicians will be necessary for controlled and sustainable utilisation.
- Economic Opportunities. Fungi have been utilized for diverse purposes since prehistoric times, from using tinder-fungus for starting fires to their role in nutrition as a source of nutrients (bioactive compounds that have led mushrooms to be considered functional foods due to their potential beneficial effects on human health). Additionally, there is a significant interest in their medicinal properties, supported by numerous studies confirming that fungi and their components exhibit a wide range of pharmacological properties, including bactericidal and antifungal activity, antiviral, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, among others. The harvesting of high gastronomic value wild mushrooms in international markets (such as black-truffle/winter truffles), the increasing use of mushrooms in the culinary and hospitality industries, and their pharmacological and industrial potential foster and diversify new business opportunities related to fungi.
Aims
This didactic unit aims to foster entrepreneurial spirit in rural areas based on the multifunctionality of mycology, demonstrating the capacity and potential that fungi have in the market. It seeks to provide the tools and basic concepts that encourage the development of new business ideas, adapt to the real situation of the areas in which they are implemented, and promote sustainable practices.
With a focus on a deep understanding of the ecological importance of fungi, participants will gain practical knowledge in the sustainable management of mycological resources. They will become familiar with fungal species of significant gastronomic and medicinal interest, explore their innovative applications, and learn about current market success stories from companies based on the utilisation of mushrooms and rural development.
The approach is designed to offer a comprehensive and interdisciplinary perspective by involving various sectors that could benefit from mycological activity in the region. This includes collaboration with sectors such as tourism, processing industries, conservation, and pharmaceuticals to maximise the positive impact of mycological activity on the community.
The overall goal is to promote responsible and sustainable use of mycological resources, increase awareness about the importance of conserving fungal diversity, and train participants to become leaders as mycological entrepreneurs in their territories.
